Put a little sparkle into your Afternoon Tea. Right now at The Montague we are offering free flowing Champagne. Starting at 12.30pm on Sundays for £59.00 per person, guests will enjoy as much Champagne as they please while they relax in the conservatory with their delicious afternoon treats including sandwiches, scones, pastries and cakes.
Sabrage Afternoon Tea
Our Sabrage Afternoon Tea is certainly unique! Learn the art of sabrage - the technique for opening a Champagne bottle with a sabre, the French Army sword. The sabre glides along the body of the bottle to break the entire neck away, leaving only the base of the bottle open and thus ready to pour.
This technique became popular in France when the army of Napoleon visited many of the aristocratic domains. It was just after the French Revolution and the sabre was the weapon of choice for Napoleon's light cavalry (the Hussars). Napoleon's spectacular victories across all Europe gave them plenty of reason to celebrate. During these parties the cavalry would open the Champagne with their sabres. We have taken an old tradition and kept it alive by becoming part of the Confrérie du Sabre d’Or, which has continued to promote this dramatic event throughout the years. First you will watch a demonstration of how to open a bottle of Champagne with a sabre, before getting the chance to try it for yourself. You will then be able to enjoy your Champagne alongside a delicious Afternoon Tea! £99.00 per person including a sabrage certificate to show your friends and family!

A Life in Food - Chicken Burgers

Our famous chicken burger came about from some time experimenting in the kitchen, trying to figure out an alternative to the basic beef burger. At this time, the film Zulu with Michael Caine and Stanley Baker was being filmed in South Africa, and the two actors would often come to our restaurant to dine on their days off. They loved this chicken burger so much that I would make batches of them to take back to the set. They are easy to make, and are fantastic with almost any salad as a side dish. £27.00 per person.

The styles of London cocktails are no longer confined to the sweet and fruit classic cocktails. Now more than ever the varieties of cocktails are wide and varied, reflecting London’s and its ever changing environment. Contemporary cocktails reflect not only fruits, but also savoury, smoke and herb infusion from around the world. These changes not only bring new flavours to the fore, but also enhance and subtly showcase some of the previously under appreciated and overlooked flavour nuances of classic spirits such as the agave flavour from authentic Tequila, Juniper and herbal infusions within gins to mention but two. I've noticed that the success of many restaurants is based on unfussy, simple food. What people want is good, delicious comfort food. I always try to provide a few of these on our menus, and duck cottage pie seems to be a simple twist on an old, hearty dish. It is a bestseller for us in winter in the UK, and makes a great dinner party main course either in a large casserole dish or in small, individual soufflé-type dishes. Beatrice Tollman £16.00.
